The Philips AX1100 is a budget-priced portable CD player without the "it's cheap so it must be rubbish" tag attached to it. Offering CD-R compatibility, Bass Boost technology and 20 hours playback on two "AA" type batteries, the AX1100 is an ideal player for those wanting a decent player, with ample features, but without spending a fortune.Packaged in a tiny box, the AX1100 Portable CD player doesn't offer anything radically different from other portable CD players. It has some good features such as CD-R compatibility--great for custom CD compilations, Bass Boost and a 15-track programmable memory as well as offering good-quality playback. The unit comes with a set of in-ear earphones and three fold-out instruction booklets in 12 different languages.
Looks wise, the player won't win any design awards, but its simple layout with the control buttons situated alongside the small LCD screen does the job well. If you look inside the lid, you will see that the control buttons in the lid simply press down on small switches in the main unit. The volume and resume/hold controls are on one side of the player as is the open-lid switch. But looks aside, the AX1100 is a good-sounding player and the supplied headphones are perfectly adequate considering the price of the player.
The AX1100 is a basic portable CD player, with a few key features, that delivers surprisingly good audio despite its low price. The bass boost is powerful and gives a warm deep sound through the supplied in-ear earphones. The player doesn't come with any batteries or a mains adapter, but for the price, you wouldn't expect it to. If you want a CD player without all the bells and whistles that doesn't compromise on audio quality, the AX1100 should be at the top of your list. --Martin Snelling
