Who says a DVD player needs to be a wide narrow box, designed to look like every other DVD player? Not Sony, apparently, whose DVP-PQ1 is decidedly individual in its shape and size. The idea, Sony says, is to provide a second DVD player for the home that is small, stylish and portable. It is certainly the latter--there is even a mini carrying slot in its underside to help you transport it from room to room. It is, though, a little large to sit beside a portable telly in the spare bedroom, and as to its "stylishness" that’s a matter for your own judgement--but you can personalise the look somewhat by creating your own inlays that sit under a clear plastic fascia plate.
The DVP-PQ1 can accommodate audio output to an amplifier or television via standard phono (RCA) sockets or co-axial digital out and video output to either composite video or S-Video. Although no leads are supplied for either coaxial or S-Video (Sony classes this as an entry level machine), Sony do provide a set of phono (RCA) cables with a SCART adapter--which work fine. Despite its entry level status the player supports a wide range of disc formats. The DVP-PQ1 is compatible with different DVD/CD media including DVD-R, CD-RW and audio CD. It will even play MP3 files stored on CD-R discs.
Audio and video quality is superb--even through a portable TV. There are no display features on the player itself, but information such as playing time, remaining time and MP3 track titles can be displayed onscreen.
This is a very neat little DVD player indeed. It lacks the sophisticated features of some models, but the features it does have work very well. As Sony suggests, it would make a good second player; or if you don't require state-of-the-art output from a DVD player, it might be worth considering in that capacity too. --Sandra Vogel

The Sony DVP-NS400 is a DVD player complete with a surround sound decoder and some excellent little touches. The slim NS400 has Sony's typical classy finish, sleek and purposeful. The menu system is mercifully easy to use and the player is simple to set up. Some thought has obviously been put into the onscreen menus, which can be confusing on some players and require frequent reference to the manual. It'll play CD-RW and CD-R discs, which can come in handy if you've a PC with CD-Writer, but for many people it's one of those "might come in useful one day" features. It'll also play NTSC discs, which is much more likely to be put to the test. It also has a handy bookmark feature, which is great for cataloguing your favourite bits --the songs in a musical for example. You can also set potential controls on specific DVDs. The memory available for both these functions is 50 slots. Another smart extra is quick navigation between chapters. This is often a clumsy procedure on other systems, requiring you to go back to the main menu.On the back there are two SCART sockets, always nice to see on any DVD player. Another area where this player scores over the simpler Sony offerings is in the inclusion of a Digital Dolby decoder offering surround sound via a full set of analogue outputs. The big advantage here is that if you've already invested in an AV amplifier without a built-in decoder you can add DVD and Dolby Digital in one go. If you don't already have the required amplifier then it's a less impressive feature as just about every modern AV amplifier has an integrated decoder apart from some budget models so, if and when you add surround sound to your system, you'll be duplicating the decoder. There's also a virtual mode which attempts to replicate the surround sound effect with a standard set of stereo speakers. Like most such systems its effectiveness is somewhat limited--there's just no substitute for the real thing. The remote control is sensibly organised and has nice big buttons for the main features. Picture quality is superb, Sony once again delivers an excellent result onscreen. It has rich colours and a crisp image. It has a notably smooth scan and slow motion too and there's a terrific "show me that again" button which plays back the last 10 seconds.
The usefulness of the surround sound decoder is debatable, but there is no doubting the quality of the player itself with some nice control features to lift it above the crowd.--Miles Berkeley

The Sony DVP-NS700VS is a slim DVD player that packs a lot into one box, including surround-sound decoders. The NS-700 has Sony's typically classy looks and, although its construction is a tad light in places, the finish is certainly good. It can handle most disc formats, including CD-RW, NTSC DVDs and Sony's new multi-channel surround audio format SACD (Super Audio CD). About the only thing it won't play are discs of MP3 files. It's easy to operate and Sony's usual excellent manual and pre-set modes make it easy to install. The remote is logically laid out, although some of the buttons are a trifle small. The picture quality is superior to the majority of budget DVD players as you would expect, though there are some minor screen glitches with strong blocks of colour, particularly red. The scan and slow-motion are fluid and smooth, while the still-frame mode is excellent.
Dolby Digital is the standard surround-sound format for DVD discs; Digital Theatre Sound is a similar but slightly superior system currently gaining support. This can make the player remarkable value depending on your set-up. You'll need to route the sound out through an AV amplifier, of course. If you don't fancy cluttering up your living room with another black box and a mass of speakers, you can send the sound to your stereo and use the virtual surround features instead. These don't match real surround sound but are a handy compromise. The NS700 has a lot of functions packed into its slim box and is undoubtedly good value. You'll need to plan your set-up though, the built-in surround sound decoders can save you money but makes less sense when partnering the NS700 with an AV amplifier which also has these decoders, as many of the more recent models do. It's also worth considering this if you are looking to consolidate home cinema with your audio into a single system, as the 700 does a good job as an audio CD player - with the added bonus of support for SACD. --Miles Berkeley
