  Fuji's F601 is the follow-up to the popular F6800 and has a wealth of options for avid digital camera users. Based around a vertical orientation instead of the usual horizontal one it will at first be unfamiliar territory for those used to a 35 mm camera, but once you've put aside your differences the images that the F601 produce are very good.

  Fuji cameras sit in a docking unit, making wires dangling around the desk a thing of the past. This is a nice addition for the newcomer keen to make the transfer of files to the PC as easy as possible.

  Working on the third generation Super CCD that FujiFilm is renowned for, the 3.1 million pixels can be boosted up to a whooping six megapixels. Running from the 3x optical zoom lens, which has an aperture of f2.8-f8 the camera can achieve a 36-108 mm equivalent focal length on a 35 mm camera. On top of this, the F601 also offers a macro mode and 4.4x digital zoom to boot.

  Manual settings offer control of everything. The most impressive being the ability to set the ISO setting to 1600 making this an ideal camera for speed or night work. Combine that with the option to capture 40 frames a second and you've got a great camera for sporting events. Other options to keep you entertained include five pre-programmed shooting modes, five flash modes and six white balance settings.

  Image quality overall is very good. The camera copes well in both night and daylight settings. The macro mode gets you close but not that close, which can be a bit of a setback if you are looking for this function, but then with a macro mode of 20 cm this camera never professes that this is one of its strong points. Colours are well covered and detail strong without too much noise--even when shooting with the 1600 ISO setting. --Jason Denwood

  Styled to look like a baby S602, the 3.2 Megapixel S304 digital camera offers 6x optical zoom and a large 1.82 inch LCD. Being a 3 Megapixel camera with a street price of under £300, this is a good alternative to the Ultra Zoom range from Olympus, as well as, being a good value 3 Megapixel camera.

  On the rear of the camera, the lack of buttons can be slightly worrying, and where most manufacturers are adding as many as possible, Fujifilm has scaled it down to only a few, mainly one to access the menu and another to change the display. This is a good thing for the beginner – where this camera is aimed at – the less buttons to press the less can go wrong.

  In addition to the 1.8 inch LCD display on the rear of the camera the S304 also has an electronic rather than optical viewfinder. Images are saved onto xd-Picture Card, a 16 Mb card comes in the box and this can store up to 12 images (2048 x 1536) on the fine setting and 26 on the normal setting (2048 x 1536).

  The pop-up flash offers multiple settings and when in manual mode the S304 offers six white balance settings to give you a bit more control.

  Picture quality is fairly standard however the S304 does struggle with contrasting colours. The zoom copes well and with it being optical rather than digital the results can be relied on. The camera is also capable of capturing up to 60 seconds of video footage with sound.

  Overall the camera does have a lack of options. There are only four pre-programmed scenes to choose from and you can’t set the ISO settings. That said, to the beginner this lack of control will probably be welcomed with open arms. This is a camera that won’t confuse, but still gives the user the benefit of a long optical zoom and fairly good pictures. --Jason Denwood
