Based on the hugely successful 35 mm Mju range, the Mju 300 Digital takes the styling that we all know and love (over 20 million sold worldwide) and brings it into the 21st century.
On the inside, Olympus's heritage in optics shines through once again as the camera boasts a superb, high precision f3.1/5.2 3x optical and 5x digital zoom (equivalent to 35-105 mm on a 35 mm camera).
On the outside, the camera has a 1.5", 134,000 pixel LCD monitor. The camera also includes a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and Olympus's new xD-Picture card technology. To protect everything the camera is cased in a brushed metal that doubles up to offer weatherproofing. Now you can take your camera to the beach or the piste without fear of water getting in.
The Mju 300 digital also boasts the usual array of user-friendly buttons and options for the beginner. A range of automatic functions such as TTL autofocus and Digital ESP (Electro Selective Pattern) light metering help ensure best results with the minimum of fuss. Using the five scene programs (portrait, self-portrait, night scene, landscape, landscape plus portrait), means that even first-time digital photographers are able to obtain impressive photos.
The camera supports full auto white balance and four pre-set white balance modes, allowing users to manually optimise the camera for shooting in light from sources such as tungsten or fluorescent bulbs. The camera also features a host of other functions and features including macro and panorama modes, 2-in-1 shooting, the recording of short movie sequences and a built-in flash with red-eye reduction.

The HP PhotoSmart 735 compact digital camera offers an impressive specification, including automatic image enhancement and an optional quick-action PC dock. HP hasn't been given the credit it deserves for its range of cameras: coming to digital imaging from the computer side rather than from conventional photography means it isn't first in people's thoughts when it comes cameras. The PhotoSmart 735 shows again that HP should be well up there with the leaders.
A chunky but comfortable compact design, using just two AA batteries for power, this new camera continues HP's relationship with Pentax by using a Pentax 3x zoom lens, to which it adds 5x digital zoom of its own. The CCD sensor has 3.2 megapixels and 16 MB of internal memory to store your images. If you need more room than this, a Secure Digital slot is available in its right-hand end.
As well as a 38 mm full-colour LCD display on its back panel, a secondary mono LCD is used in the top to provide status information on things like battery status, image quality and remaining exposures. Three buttons next to the status display combine with a further six around the main screen to set the camera's options and navigate its well-structured menu system.
Controls for zoom level and shutter release are well placed and an additional small button on the top surface of the camera provides a video function, limited only by available memory. HP includes its InstantShare software with this camera, which enables you to upload your images to a secure server run by the company. It then automatically sends e-mails to selected contacts to enable them to view your private slideshow.
Image quality is good, and you can select manual aperture control as well as different modes for action, landscape, portrait and night photography. Those looking for a good 3 megapixel digital camera with a good range of options can't go wrong with the HP PhotoSmart 735. --Simon Williams

The Powershot G1 aims at offering professional camera features in a compact body. It's only slightly heavier and larger than a typical point-and-shoot compact camera but manages to pack a lot into the space. The 3.3 Megapixel CCD gives a commendable maximum image size of 2,048 by 1,536. There's a 3x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom on top. The lens retracts into the body when it's switched off. The 1.8-inch LCD panel tilts and swivels which proves a boon when you get more adventurous positioning your camera and you can also close it so that it's facing the camera to protect it from damage. The optical viewfinder is more accurate than most, but is still not as good as a proper through the lens viewfinder. The camera comes bundled with some excellent software and even has a remote control.
As well as fully automatic modes you've the option to manually set a wide range of settings, including an excellent set of exposure controls to help you take pictures under difficult lighting conditions. Low light proves no problem and the white balance is accurate. It can capture subtle colour variations that a typical compact digital camera would miss. Images are not quite as sharp as those from cameras with larger lenses however.
The Powershot G1 is solidly built and well-designed. It is perfect for those who don't want to lug around a big camera but still require a high degree of flexibility and the capability to capture under a wide range of conditions.--Miles Berkeley

The Fuji FinePix 6800 digital camera exudes quality in all departments. From its Porsche designed stylish aluminium-magnesium alloy body, to the high resolution, gloriously detailed images it produces, this camera has it all, making it an object of desire for all enthusiast photographers. The 6800 is reassuringly weighty, rather than cumbersome at 258 grams (excluding battery) and you'll be happy to take it with you on your travels. The build quality is excellent, with a sturdy chassis and fine attention to detail.
Operation of the camera can be as simple or as complex as you like. For those point and shoot moments, you can switch on the camera, have it preset to picture mode, flick to auto and press the button. In the recent tradition of compact cameras, pressing the button down half way will tell the camera to auto focus first. Speed is good, with your first picture being available within around 2 seconds of powering up with further pictures able to be shot at around 1 second intervals. This time interval is assuming that you aren't utilising the built-in flash. A burst mode is also on offer which will capture up to five frames at 0.2 second intervals, ideal for action shots. A raft of features are also available for the more committed photographer and can be easily accessed through an intuitive combination of physical controls and menu options on the 2 inch LCD display. With 3x optical zoom, automatic/manual white balance, various shooting and flash modes, plus voice captioning, movie and audio recording, the Fuji FinePix 6800 will satisfy all bar the most demanding professional photographer. Professionals would be better served looking at the Fuji S1 Pro, which has a hot shoe for external flashes, will take Nikon F-mount lenses and can save files as uncompressed TIFs - all features not present on the 6800.
Image quality is the determining feature by which a digital camera stands or falls, and the FinePix 6800 definitely stands. Fuji's 3.3 MegaPixel Super CCD, uses a clever array of photodiodes and enables pictures to be output at a whopping 6 megapixel resolution. Images are saved as JPEGs and you can select from a wide range of options for picture quality and size, which will fit from 6 to around 200 images on the bundled 16MB SmartMedia. The compression retains good levels of information and the images are crisp, colour accurate, especially in all important flesh tones, plus hold good detail in both highlights and shadows.
Pictures are downloaded to your PC via a USB cradle (supplied). How the camera is recognised is determined by the USB mode your camera is set to each time you plug it into the cradle. DSC mode will see the camera installed essentially as a removable drive, from which you can drag and drop images from the SmartMedia memory. Set the camera to PC Cam mode and it will be installed as a USB camera suitable for use as a WebCam.
Supplied with competent software bundle, power adaptor, cradle, rechargeable lithium battery, cables, 16MB memory and case, the Fuji FinePix 6800 comes with everything you need to get started, and with a camera of this quality you may find it hard to stop. --Jason Weston
